Use each part to answer a different question
An image can help you recognise an object. Audio tells you how a word sounds. A meaning explains what it refers to, and an example shows a possible use. A story connects several words in a situation. A recall check tells you what you can produce without help.
You do not need to spend equal time on every part. If you recognise a word but cannot say it, listen and repeat. If you can say it but do not understand its use, spend more time with the example. Choose the activity for the problem you noticed.
Check the picture against the meaning
Pictures work well for concrete words such as cat, bowl, or bicycle. They can be less precise for feelings, actions, or objects that look alike. Read the word and translation before deciding what an image represents.
For 猫 (māo, cat), use the image as a prompt, then cover the word and say it. For a more abstract word, use a situation from its example as the prompt instead. If a picture and meaning appear to disagree, report the page and word through the About contact link.
Listen before copying the spelling
Listen once without repeating, then listen again and say the word. Compare your attempt with the recording. For Chinese, pay attention to the tone as well as the syllable. For English, listen for stress and the ending of the word. A translation cannot supply those details.
If there is no recording for an item, do not infer pronunciation from an English spelling approximation. Use a reliable pronunciation reference and return to the example after checking. Content availability can differ between themes and language pairs.
Move from an example to a story
Read one example and explain who does what. Then find the same word in the theme story. Ask whether its meaning stays the same and which other words help you understand it. You can use the translation to check your interpretation after trying.
